Fabric Shopping in Portland, Oregon

Regular readers know that Mrs. DTFM and I always hit the local fabric shops when traveling, and we made no exception while in Portland for the Spring Quilt Market.

Fabric Depot

Our first stop was one of the "big guns" in town. This place is huge, and is a destination for any fabric shopper in the Portland area.

Fabric Depot stocks both quilting and apparel fabrics with a fairly wide selection.

During the recent Quilt Market, they hosted several events (an "After Party") where vendors and fabric designers were able to meet the public. They also sell fabric online; check them out here: https://www.fabricdepot.com/

Mill End Store

Another large store in the Portland area, this one features much more apparel fabric in addition to quilting fabric. They had the largest selection of high-end bridal fabrics as well as silks and woolens that we've seen in a very long time.

Mill End also has a large decor fabric department, and a flat-fold annex (neatest flat-folds area I've ever seen!).

The staff here was exceptionally friendly, too. They don't sell online, but you can request swatches on their website: http://millendstore.com/

Pendleton Woolen Mill Store

Most Pendleton outlets in outlet malls stock only apparel and blankets, but no fabric. This one had an very nice fabric selection.

This special outlet has gift items and Pendleton fabric cuts as well as fabric sold by the yard and fabric remnants sold by the pound. Pendleton woolens are fairly pricey, but the quality is very high. Outlet fabrics are not sold online.

Did you know? Pendleton woolen solids are more expensive than the plaids and novelties, because the solids are painstakingly color-matched from year to year for consistency.

Cool Cottons

This is a great little shop located in a small house in one of Portland's urban neighborhoods.

The inventory is primarily of the cotton quilt shop variety, although there are garments on display made from those fabrics. We each purchased a cut of fabric here after having a pleasant conversation with the owner.

This was our favorite fabric shop in Portland and they sell online, too; check them out here: https://www.coolcottons.biz/

Bolt Fabric Boutique

Bolt is another small shop in one of Portland's urban neighborhoods. Our first attempt to visit this shop was unsuccessful due to lack of available nearby parking, but we made another try the next day and found a parking spot on a side street.

Inventory here includes a mix of unique quilting fabrics and apparel fabrics, and also some unique apparel patterns. They also sell online; check them out here: https://shop.boltfabricboutique.com/

We had a great time hopping from shop to shop (like any fabric-holics would) and are pleased to recommend all of them as potential fabric sources.

Until next time, keep those sewing machines humming, and let me know if you find an interesting local fabric shop in your area!
