Christmas Countdown!

Getting Ready for Christmas It’s the week before Christmas, and DTFM is not sewing; he’s making Christmas candy with white chocolate, peanut butter, salted peanuts, marshmallows and Rice Krispies cereal. "Dan the Fabric Man, would you share that recipe?" you ask. Certainly! Read on.

Mrs. Zech’s Candy (Mrs. Zech is my late mother-in-law) 12-oz. almond bark or white chocolate 1 tablespoon creamy peanut butter 1 cup salted peanuts 1 cup mini marshmallows 1.5 cups Rice Krispies cereal

Place chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl; add peanut butter. Microwave on high for 1 minute; stir. Return to microwave for 30 seconds; stir again. Return to microwave in 30-second intervals as needed to melt all the chocolate. (Do not overheat as the chocolate will seize up.) Stir until peanut butter is incorporated into the chocolate.

Add peanuts, marshmallows and cereal, stirring only until everything is coated with the chocolate (do not over-mix). Drop by teaspoon-ful onto parchment paper; allow to set. Store in zip-lock plastic bags.

For variety, use any flavor melting chocolate or baking chips. If using milk or dark chocolate, use Cocoa Krispies cereal.

Last-Minute Gift Ideas It’s not too late to pick up some last-minute gifts for your favorite sewing enthusiast. Here are some ideas:

Fabric Shop Gift Card

This is a great thing to have on hand when picking up specific project-related needs later on. Patronize local shops whenever possible!

Gingher Scissors These are a high-end tool and a great option for long-term use. Bent-handle shears are best (they don’t lift the fabric off the cutting surface).

Black and White Thread I always like to keep extra black and white thread on hand. Pick up a few spools of cotton-covered poly thread (like Coats and Clark Dual Duty XP…not the cheap stuff, please) for a nice stocking-stuffer. The larger the spools, the better!

Rotary Cutter and/or Rotary Mat These make cutting easier, and this may be a great opportunity to introduce someone to this method (if they don’t already have these tools). DTFM uses a counter-top-size mat. There are small and large rotary cutters; I prefer the large. Spare blades are also a good idea!

Steam Iron There are many models and styles with varying features. I prefer the highly-rated Rowenta brand. There’s nothing like a great steam iron if you’re tailoring!

Basic Notions Pins, needles, extra bobbins (if you know what type is needed); these things get used often. For a beginner, a great gift could be a sewing kit with basic supplies.

Good luck with your last-minute shopping. If you have questions, rely on your fabric shop associate to help guide you.

Until next time, best wishes for the holidays and the coming year! I look forward to sharing more sewing tips and projects with you in 2018.
